CYBERGAME (ESSENDON V CARLTON) 23/07/00
PART 16

Back

The following afternoon Gerard Healy received a call on his mobile.

"Gerard, it's Rocky Santos," the caller said. Healy had first met the Carlton official during his playing days, and knew him to be an honest and straightforward person. He also knew he was a close friend of Basher McGee. "Look mate, I'm prepared to give you a hell of a scoop if you keep my name right out of it."

Three hours later Healy introduced the radio program he shared with David Hookes. "Welcome to Sports Today, and David, I think it would be fair to say we are going to break the biggest football story of the year."

"Yes, Gerard, and boy are there are going to be a few red faces around town tomorrow."

"Well, David, a few hours ago I received a phone call from a person who does not wish to be named but must be considered a trustworthy source, and he has revealed exclusively to our show that the injury suffered by Craig Broadbent two weeks ago, for which Essendon champion Bomber Evans was suspended, was in fact caused by Carlton's Bluey McLaren, who apparently has been boasting about having fooled the AFL to all and sundry."

"Hmm. Well, why has it taken so long for the truth to emerge?"

"My mail, David, is that this person was hoping Evans would beat the rap at the Court yesterday, and when that didn't happen he's decided to leak what he knows. He believes the AFL should launch an investigation and interview McLaren and the players he's spilled the beans to."

Ten minutes later the General Manager Football Operations was on the talkback line. "Look, Gerard, if there is any truth to what you say we'll get to the bottom of it. The Rules make it quite clear that I can launch an investigation on my own volition, and I can tell you right now I'll be looking at this the first thing tomorrow morning. I can assure you we'll take a very dim view if there is any truth to this."

Healy was right about one thing by the end of the week, when Bomber Evans was cleared of the charges and the Tribunal had cancelled his suspension, it was the biggest footy story of the year. As for Bluey McLaren…
